My hair is long, about right in between my shoulder and elbow. i have been wanting to cut my hair to just above my shoulders. my boyfriend of 1 year said he doesnt like short hair but i really want it. i dont know if i should cut it or not, cuz i dont know if i should take into cosideration of what he thinks (cuz i would hope he wouldnt do anything i didnt want him to do) OR do what I think is best for me because its MY hair that i have to style in the morning. im confused....

If you really, really want to please your man, then do as he says. I, for one, wouldn't give a damn. I take it you're under 20? If so, boys come and go. Shoulder-length hair isn't that short at all and it's still very feminine. There's plenty of guys who would find a girl with shoulder-length hair really sexy.
I guess it really depends on how close you are to your boyfriend and how much you want to please him. If you're certain he's your soul-mate or something, I'd probably give his words some weight. But then again, if you're that close with him, it wouldn't make a difference how long your hair was, because he'd still love you...
So I guess my answer is: if he's just a boyfriend, cut your hair. Screw him. If you guys are the loves of each other's lives, though, it's 50/50... you can go either way. It probably won't make a difference. Leave your hair long and he'll be happy... or cut it and he'll get over it and be happy anyway... see what I'm saying?
Edit: I see, you guys are serious about each other. Well, a haircut is a very trivial thing. Why would you be afraid of him doing something you wouldn't want him to do? The worst that should happen is he would cut his hair too or start dressing in a style that you dislike or something. Again, trivial stuff, not important. If you honestly have a fear of him doing something more serious just because you cut your hair, that's not a good sign! No good boyfriend would do something terrible (cheating, etc.) just because your hair is shorter. If he would, he's SO not worth it. And I seriously doubt that this is the case. Ease your fears, take it easy! Guys aren't THAT vengeful. No matter what your decision is, it'll be fine! He'll adapt to it, I promise.
I remember when my first husband cut his hair. I was 18 as well. I'd made him swear never to cut it off (because a buzz cut made him look like a chipmunk - he has a really wide face), and he swore he wouldn't... but NO, he went behind my back and cut it one day anyway, and I just got so angry that I cut super-short bangs into my hair, dyed only the bangs orange (the rest of my hair was dyed black), and shaved my eyebrows off! (true story!!) Nothing more than that; I made myself ugly because he'd made himself ugly... both of our hairs grew back eventually and we were none the worse for it... we still loved each other. Good times, good times :-D...
You know, I agree with some of the other posters; a compromise really is the easiest thing. Maybe cut just a few inches off so your hair will still be long, but more comfortable and easier to style. But whatever you decide, please do not feel pressured because you're afraid of what your boyfriend might do. That just isn't a sign of a healthy relationship, I'd think!

My advice would be to talk to him instead of trying to second-guess him. People say they like all kinds of things, don't want their partner to do this or that, etc. etc. Now, IF it were just because of your personal tastes that you want to change hairstyle it would be fair to give (almost) equal weight to the views of your significant other half. But as it is... tell him that it's a hassle for you to have to groom the long hair every day; tell him it keeps getting in the way and could be dangerous; tell him it's too hot in the summer. If he loves you he'll not want you to go through a lot of trouble just for his visual pleasure.

Do what YOU want to do. Just because he doesn't like short hair, it shouldn't keep you from cutting it. It's YOUR hair, not his. You should do whatever you want to your own hair. He shouldn't be making decisions for you. And who knows...maybe he will like your new hair cut. :-)

Than I read your whole letter and realized that you love your boyfriend,who doesn`t agree with this,and that it would be best for you if he`s also going to like your new hair. I was in the same position. Didn`t know what to do. I really wanted new haircut,but my boyfriend wasn`t thrilled.Then I spoke to him,and I told him how much I wanted it. He agreed with me,because he liked ME. And my hair grew up again. If your boyfriend loves YOU,than he will realize that your hair can always grow.

Its your hair and you life. My boyfriend doesn't like my piercings, but he went when I got them, encouraged me to do what I want with my body and he still says I'm beautiful.

in my opinion i think u should not cut ur hair, one thing i know is that the beauty of a girl liass on her hair...
but if u really want this so talk to him and tell him that u cant stand ur hair anymore and u really want to change it..so compromise and cut it in a way u both are happy...

I think that it is a good idea that you get your boyfriends opinion, but I think in the end you should make your own decision. Maybe you should just get it done anyway because I don't think that length is that short. It could be alot shorter. He might like it he just has to see it on you, just remind him that your hair will grow back. Hope this helped!
